Robert “Bob” Kyber
Master Carpenter, Cabinet Maker and Gentleman
Robert “Bob” Kyber, 85, of Chatham Township, NJ passed away on Wednesday morning November 2, 2011 as he wished, in the home he built and had shared with his beloved wife Dot.
Born in Newark, Bob lived in Hillside, Union where he graduated with the Union High class of ‘44, Hillside (again) and finally Chatham Township. After gaining experience in his chosen trade, he established R. Kyber Cabinets and Carpentry in 1949, headquartered first in Hillside and then in Chatham until he retired at age 79 in 2005.
For 55 years, Bob’s customers, who became his friends, were always very satisfied with his superb, neat and often ingenious woodworking skills. Known primarily for custom cabinets and fine woodworking, Bob’s motto of “No Job Too Small” barely sanded the surface of his talents. He could do it all, from building cabinets to complete buildings and houses, including the two he shared with his precious wife Dot. Bob tackled the intricate, difficult jobs most carpenters avoid and always produced a masterpiece.
In addition to carpentry, Bob had a vast knowledge of all the allied building trades - plumbing, electrical, masonry, roofing, etc. and could plan a multifaceted job so everything went smoothly. If you did it his way, you were confident there would be no costly mistakes or delays, only a fine, high quality result. Bob was universally respected by those in the building trades who worked alongside him, many of whom called him a friend.
In the 1970's, Bob supervised the restoration of his prize winning 1930 Model A Ford Roadster which he enjoyed driving locally with Dot. Later he acquired his 1975 Chevrolet Caprice which he toured throughout New Jersey. He actively showed both cars at old car meets, especially those of the NJ Region of the Antique Automobile Club of America, of which he was a proud member for over 20 years (an “old timer”) until his passing. Bob also enthusiastically collected and restored antique pedal cars, collectible toys, and carpentry collectibles.
As a member of the Hillside Rotary Club for 30 years, Bob participated in many Rotary conventions and fund raisers. For his selfless efforts and contributions on behalf of Rotary, Bob was awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship, the highest honor and award that can be bestowed upon a Rotarian.
Bob was predeceased by his loving wife of over 40 years, Dorothy “Dot” (nee Spinning) Kyber, his treasured parents George and Margaret, his brother Donald Kyber Sr, nephew Donald Kyber Jr, his cherished Aunt Rosie and sister in law Phoebe and Harry Anderson and good friends, Mr. and Mrs. “D”.
Bob is survived by many friends including his “adopted” family, the Singes – his very good friend Marilyn Singe, his best friend of 78 years (since second grade) Herb Singe (Sr.) and wife Margaret (his friend for over 50 years) and good friends Herb, Belinda, Herb and Heidi Singe. All of the Singes will miss you “Mr. Bob”. He is also survived by his neighborhood friends who considered him family – Butch Lapp, Dot Morehouse, Mary Ann Fasano, Darlene Bakur, Rinna and Sheldon Lin, Melanie Mancuso, Kim Tulloch, Linda Sisk, Mickey & Anne Thompson, Lois and Jim Price, and Aldona Skrypa. They will miss seeing him on the porch or puttering around his house and at the weekly wine parties.
He is also survived by his sister in law Ann Kyber, nephew Steven Kyber, niece Janice and Vincent Jankowski, grandniece Lisa and grandnephew Peter Jankowski, nieces Nancy Best and Jane Ellen Anderson and sister in law Helen Whittle.
A celebration of Bob’s life will be held on Monday, November 7, 2011 at the Growney Funeral Home, 1070 North Broad St., Hillside, NJ. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 AM with funeral services at 11 AM and entombment next to his beloved Dot at Hollywood Memorial Park in Union, NJ with a repast to follow. No Flowers Please but we do hope Bob’s friends will attend this celebration of his life and share a reminiscence or two of Bob, either extemporaneously or in writing to be read aloud by yourself or another.
